The Label
Sleek and ultramodern, clothes by Narciso Rodriguez combine bold colors and shapes with luxurious fabrics, creating a contemporary vision of femininity that’s more about strong silhouettes and clean lines than frills and pastels. Embraced by red carpet starlets and dress-to-impress socialites, the label specializes in slinky, silky eveningwear, but also makes suits and cocktail wear that reference the mod style of the early-1960's.
The Look
Sexy, bold women's wear with a touch of Jackie O-whimsy.
The Designer
Born in New Jersey to Cuban-American parents, Narciso Rodriguez graduated from Parsons School of Design with a job offer to assist Donna Karan at Anne Klein. He then moved to another Klein—Calvin—to continue designing women's wear, and eventually accepted backing from Italian company Aeffe to present his first ready-to-wear show in 1997. The collection was a hit, and the orders began pouring in, including one from Carolyn Bessette, who insisted Rodriguez make the dress for her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr. Featured prominently in the one official photo of the ceremony, and instantly knocked-off, the dress catapulted the designer into the next realm; by 2003, Rodriguez was the only designer to ever receive back-to-back CFDA Awards for outstanding achievement in fashion. He also holds a Vogue/ VH1 Fashion Rocks award for best designer, and recently made his first foray into cosmetics with an eponymous fragrance. Named one of the 25 most powerful Hispanics in America by Time Magazine, Rodriguez is also the head designer for Loewe, a Spanish couture label owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennisey (LVMH) that snagged the in-demand designer for their Creative Director post in 1997.
